HOW TO: View Windows Group SQL Server Login Membership

Within SQL Server it is possible to grant Windows Groups login access to database resources.  When doing so however, it can be difficult for the database administrator to reconcile specifically what users have access to what resources.  RockSolid helps to resolve this administration challenge by automatically enumerating Windows Groups which have login access to SQL Server and allow the members of those groups to be inspected and understood within the RockSolid console.

Viewing Windows Group Login Members

To view the members of a windows group that have access to the SQL Server via their group membership perform the following:

  • Navigate to the relevant instance via the "Manage Instance" screen.
  • From the instance details overview screen click the logins button to navigate to the logins screen.

On this screen you can see logins of various types.  SQL Server logins and Windows User logins are shown with the user icon.  Windows Group logins are shown with a group icon.  And Windows User logins who gain access via inherited group membership(s) are shown with a grey user login.
